Sandvik Church

Beautifully situated on a peninsula by Lake Fegen lies Sandvik Church. People have gathered here since the Middle Ages. According to legend, a wealthy woman was responsible for the church being built. She was crossing Lake Fegen when she was caught in a violent storm. In her despair, she prayed to God and promised to build a church if she survived. Her boat drifted ashore right here on the peninsula, and the woman kept her promise.

Throughout the centuries, the church has suffered several fires. In 1644, it was burned down by Danish troops during the turmoil of war. Today, the present church, built from red granite in the 1890s, stands as an impressive landmark and a living cultural heritage site.

During the summer months, the area is full of life. In the charming parish hall next to the church, you can enjoy a summer café and browse locally made handicrafts.
