Rules in nature

Rules in Nature

In the Fegen area, which is largely a nature reserve, there are special rules that must be followed when you visit. The rules exist to protect the valuable natural environment and the rich wildlife.

Here you will find information about what applies when you stay in the area.

Read more at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Special Rules in the Fegen Nature Reserve

You are welcome to visit Fegen – but keep in mind that it is not allowed to:

  • make a fire anywhere other than in designated places
  • camp or set up a caravan except in places designated by the manager (you may camp there for a maximum of two nights)

Between April 1 and July 31, it is also prohibited to:

  • travel or stay within bird protection areas
  • operate a motorized vessel on Lake Fegen at a speed exceeding 5 knots

Here you can see a map of the nature reserve.

Special Rules Around Lake Kalvsjön

Even outside the nature reserve, around Lake Kalvsjön, a local fire ban applies between May 1 and September 30.

This means that it is forbidden to make a fire:

  • within 200 meters of the shoreline of Lake Kalvsjön
  • within 100 meters of the shoreline of Lillån, Stångån (south of the road bridge), and Ätran (south of the road bridge)

Here you can find a map of the area where the local fire ban applies

Right of Public Access – Respect in Nature

In addition to the local rules, the Right of Public Access applies throughout Sweden’s nature. It gives us great opportunities to spend time outdoors – but it also means responsibility to show respect.

Hiking, Cycling, or Horseback Riding

You may hike, cycle, or ride in nature. However, you may not cross private yards, forest plantations, fields, or other land with crops.

Private yards are areas close to farms and houses where residents have the right not to be disturbed.

If you pass through a pasture, always close gates behind you. Avoid cycling or riding where the ground is soft and sensitive. Horseback riding is not permitted on marked or groomed ski trails.

Tents and Caravans

You may pitch a tent for a single night in nature. For longer stays in the same place or for several tents, the landowner’s permission is required.

You also need permission to park a caravan along a private road. It is not allowed to drive a motorhome or caravan off-road, for example along a beach or in a field.

Please note that special rules apply in the Fegen area.

On the Water

You may travel by boat, anchor and temporarily moor at the shore, go ashore, and swim – as long as it is not near residential houses.

Be aware that there are bird protection areas and other protected zones where boating or going ashore may be prohibited. These areas are marked with signs.

Fishing

A fishing license or other permit is required to fish. In lakes where no fishing licenses are sold, fishing is prohibited.

Dogs

Do not disturb animals’ nests or young. It is forbidden to disturb or harm wildlife.

Between March 1 and August 20, dogs may not run loose in nature. During the rest of the year, dogs must be kept under supervision. In many outdoor areas, leash requirements apply.

Fire

During summer, fire bans are common. At such times, all open flames are prohibited, even in designated fire pits.

At other times, fires are allowed if done with great caution and fully extinguished afterward. Never make a fire directly on rock surfaces – they can crack.

Please note that special rules apply in the Fegen area.

Berries, Mushrooms, and Flowers

You may pick berries, mushrooms, and flowers that are not protected. However, you may not cut down trees or bushes, break branches, or otherwise damage plants.

Take Your Litter With You

It is forbidden to leave litter in nature. Glass, cans, plastic, fishing lines, and other waste can harm both people and animals and spoil nature experiences.
