Kindahus

On a promontory in Ätran are the ruins of Kinnahus or Kindahus as it is also called, a defense fortress mentioned already in the medieval Erik Chronicle. Welcome to this ruined fortress from the 14th century.

A medieval defense castle

The castle Kinnahus or Kindahus is located on a promontory formed by the outlet of Kalvån into Ätran. The old roads along the Viskan and Ätran valleys were of great importance to the Swedish army. Kinnahus was built to oversee the important route, called the "ridhväg", along the Ätrans valley.

The castle was probably built in the second half of the 13th century. The north-eastern part is said to be the oldest. But the dating is uncertain because there are no direct written sources. The castle is first mentioned in 1306 when it was besieged by a Danish army. The castle was besieged again by the Danes in 1452.

There have been no archaeological excavations at Kinnahus. The castle was probably built of wood and was not very strong in terms of defense. But the strategic location of the castle was excellent.

It is still possible to see how the old fortification was built. It consists of triple moats that were probably filled with water when the castle was in use. The outer rampart was equipped with flanking towers. The main front faced east. On the other sides, the castle is limited by Ätran and Lillån.

Things to keep in mind as a visitor

Kinnahus is located on private land, with residents around. Remember to show consideration, park in the designated area and do not litter.
