Mårdaklev church

For at least 800 years there has been a church here, on the hill facing Ätran. In 1688 the church was replaced for the first time, it stood until the middle of the 19th century when they built the one that still stands today.

About the church

On the hill facing Ätran there has been a church for at least 800 years, that's how old the baptismal font is, carved in the 13th century, which you can find in the church.

In 1688, a new particle-covered, red-colored church was built, which lasted until the middle of the 19th century. There had been complaints that the church was dilapidated and needed repair, but instead of repairing, they chose to build a new church that was completed in 1875-1876. The baptismal font, altarpiece and pulpit in today's church all come from the old church.

The altarpiece depicts Christ on the cross and is said to be a copy of Rembrandt. It was donated to the church in the 18th century by the captain Hedenberg from Erikslund. The frame was made by Sven Nilsson Morin in 1804. Sven was originally a farmhand on a farm in Småland but became recognized as a talented woodcarver and has made many church fixtures. He also made the pulpit, for example.
